What Is the Sports World’s Newest Fashion Trend? Bedazzle-Maxxing
It is the year of the bedazzle, and the craft aisle has become the new team store.
Somewhere between the return of McBling and Gen Z’s obsession with rhinestones, sports merch has become more fashion-forward than ever.
From crystal-covered T-shirts and hats to custom jackets and DIY fan gear, athletes and fans are proving that the flashier the look, the better.
The McBling Comeback✨
If all the sparkle feels familiar, that’s because it is.
Fashion has fully embraced the return of the McBling era, the aesthetic that thrived between 2003 and 2008. After the Y2K wave came flashy logos, rhinestones, oversized graphics and maximalism. Think Juicy Couture velour sets, studded low-rise jeans, Von Dutch trucker hats, Baby Phat, Ed Hardy, and Victoria’s Secret.
Today, newer generations have embraced that same aesthetic. The popularity of brands like Chrome Hearts and the return of rhinestones have helped bring maximalist style back, especially in sports culture.
NBA Finals
Recently, the trend took over a major moment in basketball.
After the Knicks won the 2026 NBA Finals, players swapped the traditional championship T-shirt for Nike’s crystal-inspired, old-school-style “Locker Room” shirt. The internet was immediately split on the look. Some loved the NBA leaning into a bolder design, while others couldn’t understand why a championship shirt needed sparkles.
But the rhinestones weren’t random–it was all intentional.
When designing the championship shirt, Nike looked to younger consumers for inspiration. According to GQ, the company “specifically tuned to the 14-17-year-old athlete as the muse,” finding that they gravitate toward styles that feel “new, modern, different.” Nike stated that younger consumers’ “fearless, edgy attitude is what’s driving the design language now.”
NBA Draft
A few weeks later, the sparkle continued.
The NBA’s newest draft picks walked across the stage wearing New Era caps featuring crystal-embellished team logos. Once again, the internet couldn’t decide if they were iconic or over the top.
Whether the draft picks wanted a bedazzled hat hanging on their wall forever or not, we have to admit they all pulled it off.
World Cup
Future kicked off the tournament’s opening ceremony in a red and silver crystal-embroidered Louis Vuitton varsity jacket, bringing the rhinestones to one of the biggest stages in sports.
Unfortunately, FIFA equipment rules don’t allow players to modify their game boots, but if they could, we have a feeling we’d be seeing a lot more sparkle on the field.

The Essentials
Everything you need to get started all in one kit, including rhinestones and the tools to apply them.
What You’ll Need
T-shirt, tank top or jersey
Assorted rhinestones, crystals, or flat-back gems
Fabric glue
Tweezers or a rhinestone picker
Pencil, chalk or fabric marker
Before You Start
Choose your placement: Decide where you want the design to go, across the chest, on the sleeves, around a logo, or anywhere else you want to add some sparkle.
Mix your rhinestones: Using a combination of large and small gems helps create dimension. Let the bigger stones stand out, then use smaller ones to fill gaps or add detail.
Pick a color palette: Stick with your team’s colors or choose colors that complement your shirt for a cohesive look.
Application
Lay your shirt on a flat surface and arrange the rhinestones first to make sure you’re happy with the design before attaching anything.
Add a small amount of fabric glue to one section at a time.
Place each rhinestone carefully with tweezers or a gem picker, gently pressing it into place.
Allow the shirt to dry completely before wearing it. Most fabric glues need about 24 hours to fully set.
Turn the shirt inside out before hand washing or use a gentle machine cycle to protect rhinestones.
